今回リリースCD「Deep Silence」は、2004年に作成された初のスタジオ録音 Hot Waltz から実に18年ぶりとなったが、今回の特徴は何といっても、Sun Shipのオリジナルに詞がついたこと。 情感深くかつメッセージ性の強いSun Shipのオリジナル曲に詞をつけたのは、親子以上に年の離れた村上俊二に師事していた山口蘭。 彼女の持つ、言葉に対する感受性の強さとハーモニーに対する卓越したセンスを活かしつつ、これまでSun Shipが表現してきた日本の空気、においといったものが、従来同様に滲み 出る作品に仕上がっている。また詞を英語で練り上げたことで、言語での主張が、かえって適度に抑制されていることも大事な要素である。 その上で、これをボーカルで表現するのが、ジャズアルバム初挑戦の山口淳子。その音楽経験は極めて豊かである。民謡の宝庫北海道の港町で幼少から父が歌う民謡に 触れ、その後、国立音楽大学でクラシック音楽を学び、さらに1990年代半ばには米国で2 年間ボーカルの研鑽を積んでおり、これらの経験を踏まえ、声が楽器の一つとなりバンドと一体化する独特のジャズボーカルの世界を作り出している。 Deep Silence 1. This is the second collaboration between Sunship and Guevara. This is a CD containing a live performance in Niigata. Sunship is an emotional original jazz group with many Ru Kyoku songs. There, Guevara of alto saxophone, which is also very emotional, is the best match. The first song, Stedia's Sea Goes, starts with a tenor saxophone solo by a row of trees in the intro, and after the tempo comes out, each solo is strongly influenced by a free jazz element within a hard bop framework as a band sound. In the long way off of the title song, the sounds of the five members are intertwined and develop a magnificent story.
